My brothers have spent almost a year over in a dessert. In the summer it's hot, with temperatures over 120 degrees. They live in pods, guard prisoners, and deal with black-out sandstorms. But one of the highlights is being able to serve others.
Wives and children of prisoners can visit every Sunday. The soldiers in the 145th started receiving so many packages with candy and other things that they didn't have room to store it anymore and so they started giving it away to the children on visitation day.
Pretty soon the boys would write home and request that we not send them anything, but instead, send things they could give to the children. The pictures you see here are Jake and Travis handing out toys, socks, and candy to Iraqi children.
I've been thinking a lot of selfless service lately, wishing I spent less time at the computer and more time serving others. What great examples my brothers are of serving others selflessly...even these children who Travis calls "future terrorrists." Isn't it interesting that even in a place where they are in less than desirable circumstances, they still find some joy...and it comes from serving others.

Charity is the true love of Christ, and there are so many people I know who truly exemplify charity in so many ways. My friend and neighbor has offered to watch Aiden for me a few hours every week so that I can work uninterruped during my weekly conference call. I was so appreciative of her offer to do this for me; it's warming to know that there are good people everywhere that the Lord puts in our lives to enrich and bless us. I am so blessed to have such angels in my life that love and support us while we are away from our families.
