Sunday Drive

So we decided to do something wild and go for a little Sunday drive yesterday, and snapped a few photos along the way to share our little journey with you. So instead of seeing fall leaves and sage brush, let us introduce you to the Kitsap Peninsula.

We started out by heading down to Tacoma, where we dropped by to see Stadium High School. (It's the cool castle-looking building in the background.) You might recognize this as the high school where "10 Things I Hate About You" was filmed. Dr. Tom wanted to check it out because it was going to be a luxury hotel for the Northern Pacific Railway, but due to financial circumstances somehow ended up as possibly the coolest high school ever with a super cool football field. Plus, we can't say enough about the view overlooking the Sound. I'd go to high school all over again to hang at this place.

Then, we continued on over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. After crossing we were officially on the Kitsap Peninsula. What you see in this picture are the second and third versions of the bridge. The original bridge was destroyed by wind in 1940 shortly after it was built. I guess that with the construction of the second span it is now the longest pair of suspension bridges in the world.

Continuing on our way, we stopped at possibly one of the most charming little towns around. In honor of DorkVomit, (you know who you are :) , who served his mission in this quaint little waterfront town, we decided to check it out. The pic at the top of this post is of Gig Harbor, and it's easy to see why this is a place we could call home. Next time we come to visit we're going on another day when we can shop in the cute little antique shops and boutiques and eat lunch down by the sailboats on the water.Next on the stop was Bremerton, home of a US Navy shipyard. This was the part of the drive where Dr. Tom got really excited. It turns out the Bremerton Navy Yard is home to essentially a graveyard of old ships and four decommissioned aircraft carriers. And for all of us non-military-, trivia people, that basically means that this is a like an old folks home for big, old ships. Dr. Tom thinks we're going back to explore this more. Maybe I'll just drop him off here and spend the afternoon shopping in Gig Harbor. From here, we hopped onto the Bremerton-Seattle ferry and headed back home. It was a beautiful ride, and we headed back home with the sun setting in the west over the water. We tried to capture a picture with the evening sun sparkling off of the buildings downtown. It was windy and freezing, so we didn't capture a great photo....it was too cold! And we have to send kudos to the 10 year old kid who snapped the pic for us.

So our little Sunday adventure turned out to be a definite repeat. We hope you'll come visit us soon so you can join us next time!

We did the exact same drive but on Saturday! My Grandpa's funeral was in Port Orchard so we drove over the Narrows Bridge through Gig Harbor and then into Port Orchard. Afterwards we kept driving on to Bainbridge Island to my parents house. Next time you want to take the little trip you'll have to let us know. We love Kitsap County and can't wait to move back someday!
